Since 1988, the academy has become a pilot institution of standardized training for resident physicians in Beijing. Currently, there are 16 national training bases for resident physicians: Department of Internal Medicine, Department of General Surgery, Department of Surgery (specifically Neurosurgery), Department of Neurology, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Department of Emergency, Eepartment of Otolaryngology, Department of Anesthesiology, Department of Dermatology, Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, Department of Radiology, Department of Ultrasound, Department of Nuclear Medicine, Department of Clinical Pathology, Department of General Medicine, Department of Stomatology and 19 training bases for resident physicians in Beijing (besides the national bases, there are pharmacist base, laboratory technician base and rehabilitation technician base). In 2000, as the "clinical skill assessment area of Xuanwu Hospital for standardized training of resident physicians in Beijing", it began to undertake the assessment at the completion of resident training in Beijing. It has lasted for 18 years so far. In 2015, it was rated as one of the top ten bases for the standardized training of resident physicians in Beijing and the national model base for the standardized training of resident physicians. In 2017, it became the first batch of national standardized training base for specialized physicians (neurosurgery).

The academy leaders attached great importance to the training of resident physicians and established a three-level organization and management institution. Continuous base construction and tamping training platform have been conducted to ensure the basic conditions of base. From the enrollment of resident physicians, pre-work training, rotation, department-entry education, process management, training activities, department ending examination, annual assessment, evaluation, graduation examination, to teacher’s admittance, training, evaluation, motivation, etc., and to the performance appraisal of professional base, evaluation method, administrative measures for the use of training funds for resident physicians, it has constantly improved the management mechanism to ensure the implementing efficiency and strengthen the organization and management. Much efforts in multiple aspects have been made: paying attention to the process management and constantly drawing lessons from the past, establishing a perfect quality control system, using the combination of 360-degree of multiple-source feedback, supervision, evaluation and other methods to evaluate the professional bases, instructors and resident physicians synthetically,stablishing a sound reward and punishment mechanism, strengthening supervision at all levels, promoting sustainable development to ensure the quality of training, strengthening the management of funds, personnel, legal practice and accommodation to facilitate the standardized training of resident physicians, exploring and carrying out the scientific researches actively, strengthening the communication and exchanges with other academies to play a role as a demonstration base.

The base attaches great importance to teacher’s training and team building, improves teacher management mechanism, and includes individual and department performance assessment. In 2016, all the instructors of resident physicians were trained and re-certified, and 635 teachers were approved as resident instructors in Beijing. The academy started to set up the "Xinglin physician award" in 2008 and "Liji resident physician award" in 2004, which are awarded to the outstanding resident instructors and resident physicians. Professor Jia Jianguo, Professor Kang Hua and Professor Sun Wanling were respectively awarded the title of the excellent management faculty, excellent professional base director and excellent teacher in the national standardized training for resident physicians. The passing rate of standardized training of resident physicians in the academy over these years have ranked among the top in Beijing.
