Department of radiology, Xuanwu Hospital, Capital Medical University was established when Xuanwu Hospital was originally opened in 1958. After years of sustained and rapid development, now it is a modern medical imaging center with advanced imaging equipment, leading-edge technology and outstanding talent team. In 2000 radiology discipline was awarded Beijing Key constructive discipline and later in 2007 it was awarded China national key constructive discipline.

Now we have many advanced imaging facilities, including several spiral computed tomography machines (CT), high-field magnetic resonance imaging equipment(MRI), digital photography, digital mammography and bedside X-ray machines. We are one of the earliest fully digital and paperless radiology departments in China with the implement of picture archiving and communication system(PACS) and radiology information system(RIS).

Currently we have 116 employees including 10 chief physicians, 10 associate chief physicians, 20 intermediate professional titles (medical, technical, and nursing), 4 doctoral supervisors, and 8 master’s supervisors. Majority of our doctors have overseas study or work experience. Professor Kuncheng Li, member of Radiology Branch of Chinese Medical Association, director of Beijing Medical Imaging Quality Control and Improvement Center, director of the Beijing Key Laboratory of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Brain Informatics is chief expert of our department. Professor Jie Lu, member of National Natural Science Foundation Outstanding Young Scientists, member of Beijing NOVA program of Science and Technology, member of Beijing Municipal Health Talents, member of Beijing High-level Health Technology Talents, member of Radiology Branch of Chinese Medical Association and the associate director of Radiology Branch of Beijing Medical Association is now served as our department director. Our diagnostic team is divided into 6 groups according to human body systems as neural group, respiratory group, circulatory group, abdominal group, musculoskeletal group and mammary group. Every group have at least one professional experienced expert to lead the daily medical work and clinical group consultation for difficult cases. With many years of development, both neuro imaging and cardiovascular imaging is in the leading position in China.

In the past years we have conducted several comparative neuroimaging researches against major brain diseases such as stroke, Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, epilepsy and brain tumors in which we focus on establishing disease-optimized examination protocols based on the diagnostic and differential diagnosis of each disease. And this research process and result was published in the book called "Comparative Neuroimaging" and was promoted through national training courses for many years. Also we undertook several training project of National Brain Defense Committee which have trained many radiologists who were specialized in the diagnosis of stroke.

In research, we positively cooperated with famous research institutes all over the world such as Institute of Automation(CAS), Institute of High Energy Physics (CAS) , Institute of Psychology(CAS), Tsinghua University, Beijing Normal University, Beijing University of Technology, Neusoft Corporation, Harvard University Massachusetts General Hospital, Johns Hopkins University Hospital and Melbourne University Medical School.

Up to now, we have trained over 200 masters and doctors and more than 10 post-doctors whose research papers was awarded National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award once, Beijing Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Awards twice, and Excellent Doctoral Dissertations Awards from Capital Medical University 8 times. Totally more than 1,000 papers (including 247 SCI papers) and 100 international conference articles were published. Our team have hosted or participated in more than 60 national-level or provincial-level research projects and won provincial-level scientific research awards over 20 times.

Our department also undertakes teaching projects of Capital Medical University. All the instructors in our department own titles of senior teacher, associate professor or professor with rich clinical knowledge and teaching experience. Particularly an undergraduate course, medical imaging course, was awarded Beijing High Quality Education Course. As one of the residents standardized training centers, we have trained more than 40 residents from various medical institutions in Beijing in the past five years with the pass rate of 100%.

In a word, Department of Radiology, Xuanwu Hospital, Capital Medical University now is a medical imaging diagnosis and treatment center integrated with medical treatment, teaching and scientific research with advanced diagnostic techniques, outstanding academic achievements and nice patient service.
